Cultural Capital

Vilnius, capital of the
Republic of Lithuania, will be next year's European Cultural
Capital, together with the Austrian town Linz.
As Brussels has got its
Mannekenpis and Copenhagen its mermaid, Vilnius has created its own
international symbol: a fleet of angels. Scattered all over the
capital town, they have descended upon the city’s squares and
adorned some of its structures.
The story of how these
angels originated in Vilnius is quite interesting. Four years ago
sculptor Vaidas Ramoška organised an event against hatred. To
symbolize intolerance, he decided to fashion a blue goat which was
placed in the city.
The expected outcome was soon reached: the statue was
destroyed.
Following this
incident, the mayor of Vilnius suggested that the artist create
sculptures which residents would not dare vandalize.
Roman Catholicism being the main religion of this multicultural town
(there are Russian, Polish, Belarusian, Latvian, and Jewish
minorities among the Lithuanian population), the
angels arrived and survived in Vilnius.
