¿Cacería o carnicería?

Hace poco, Mónica, una amiga viajera, nos mandó estas fotos denuncias. El asunto de su correo simplemente decía:
"Fw. Dinamarca una vergüenza, difúndanlo por favor".

Todas las fotos llevaban la mención de una cadena de televisión árabe. Pero al no entender el árabe, no teníamos idea de lo que contaba la página web y decidimos no poner el enlace.

Las imágenes no dejaban indiferentes. Al no saber quién ni dónde ni cuándo se sacaron las fotos, empezamos a investigar en la red.

Descubrimos que las mismas fotos han sido colgadas en la red desde el año 2000 y lógicamente nos preguntamos cuál es la situación actual. Hasta la fecha no hemos encontrado la respuesta, así que si alguien lo sabe, por favor, que nos avise.

También leímos unos cuantos artículos en contra y a favor de la sangrante matanza, una serie de informaciones que podríamos resumir de la siguiente manera :

La escena tiene lugar en las Islas Feroe, un archipiélago de 18 islas aisladas al noroeste de Europa. Es un territorio danés con un sistema de autonomía que les ha permitido quedar fuera de la Unión Europea cuando Dinamarca entró en la CEE en 1973. Con lo cual, los asuntos feroenses no dependen directamente de Copenhague.

Desde hace mil años, cada año, las ballenas piloto se acercan a las islas según los cambios térmicos del agua en busca de aguas poco profundas y ricas en nutrientes.

Cuando un grupo de ballena se acerca, un vigilante da el aviso y las embarcaciones salen a acorralar los cetáceos. Antiguamente eran barcas con remos; ahora llevan motor, radio y sonar con lo cual, el cuerpo a cuerpo entre el hombre y el animal ha perdido de su igualdad.

Una vez en la bahía donde les espera toda la población disponible (las escuelas también se vacían para el acontecimiento), los cetáceos vareados quedan atrapados y la matanza empieza a golpe de ganchos atados con cuerdas.

El producto de la cacería (carne y grasa) se reparte gratuitamente entre toda la población. Ni se comercializa ni se exporta. Tradicionalmente, la grasa proporcionaba las vitaminas que no podían producir en el archipiélago donde resulta imposible cultivar hortalizas y frutas por motivos climatícos.

Pese a los medios de transporte internacionales y la globalización del mercado, que han solucionado muchos problemas en las islas, la carne conseguida de las ballenas equivale a la mitad de la producción total agrícola de carne vacuna y de ovejas del archipiélago.

Aunque el gobierno de Las Feroes controla la cantidad de ballenas piloto matadas desde la orilla cada año, muchos opinan que el siglo XXI no está para tanta barbaría. Algunos lo entienden, otros no. Algunos lo aceptan, otros consideran que nada, ya, justifica la tradicional cacería.

Nosotros sólo hemos llegado a la conclusión de que si los mataderos estuvieran al aire libre, a la vista de todos, seguramente más de uno quedaría asqueado y dejaría de comer la rica carne que sólo vemos sangrar en nuestros platos.

Hunting or slaughtering?

Some time ago, Monica, a travelling friend of ours, sent us these pictures with a simple mention which said:
“Forward. Shame on Denmark, let everybody know please”

An Arab TV channel reference was printed on each picture. As we don’t read Arab and could not understand the content of the web, we decided not to maintain the TV credit.

The images were striking by themselves but the lack of context bothered us. We wanted to know by whom, where and when they had been taken. We therefore decided to investigate in internet.

We discovered that the same pictures had been on line since the year 2000. And logically we started wondering what the present situation would be. And so far we haven't found out the answer. So, if anyone knows about it, please let us know.

Besides, we read some articles pro and against the bloody killing and collected information that we could sum up as follows.

The scene takes place every year in the Faroe Islands, an archipelago of 18 islands which are isolated in the northwest of Europe. It is a Danish territory with an autonomous system which has enabled them to keep out of the European Union when Denmark joined the EEC in 1973. As a consequence, Denmark is not directly responsible for some matters related with the Feroe islands.

For a century, according to the variation in water temperature, the pilot whales have got nearer the islands looking for shallow waters rich in nutrients. When a group of whales gets closer, a watchman gives the alarm and boats sail off to give them chase. Formerly, they used to use rowing boats; nowadays they have motor boats equipped with radio and sonar which means that the fight between men and animals is not so fair.

Once rounded up in a bay, the whales quickly get stuck near the shore and the slaughter starts with hooks tied to slopes.

The result of the hunt (meat and grease) is divided between the inhabitants who get it free of charge. It’s neither sold nor exported. Whale grease has traditionally supplied the Feroe population with the vitamins which could not be produced on the islands where vegetable and fruit cannot be grown for climatic reasons.

In spite of the international means of transportation and so-called globalized market which have solved many issues on the islands, the meat obtained from the whales still accounts for half of the total islands’ production derived from cattle breeding (both cows and sheep).

Although the government of the Feroe Island controls the quantity of pilot whales yearly killed on the coast, some think that there should not be such a disgusting event in the XXI st century. Some understand why it’s happening. Others don’t. Some accept the situation. Others consider that nothing can justify such an appalling hunt.

We have personally come up to the conclusion that if slaughter houses were public venues with free entrance for meat consumers, more than one of us would feel sick and stop eating the tasty meat that we only see bleeding in our plates.
