Shopping in Taiwanese markets
In Taiwan, and most of east Asia, there are plenty of places to buy Chinese objets d'art, especially jade and ceramics, as well as furniture. A Taiwanese jade market is usually an interesting place to go, provided you have enough Mandarin to bargain the price down from the absurdly high initial quote offered by the vendor. Telling a female jade seller that you are purchasing some jade for your mother, or sweetheart, can help get you a better deal. Jade markets in Taiwan also sell wood carvings and ambergris. Chinese ceramics are justly famous, and, to reiterate the point made above, it is a mystery why the Chinese could invent such artistry a millenium ago, but now are reduced to mass-produced goods for Wal-Mart. Although you can purchase fine ceramic work just about anywhere, there is a town in Taipei county named Yingge, which has been the Limoges of Taiwan for two centuries. It has several streets packed with high-quality vases, bowls and teacups, in styles ranging from traditional to avant-garde.
